The catch is that the strike rate is heavily influenced by the quality of the runners in the recent sample. A yard that has been running mainly maidens at small midweek tracks will produce a lower strike rate than a yard that has been running handicappers at major Saturday meetings, even if the underlying training quality is identical. Adjusting the raw strike rate for the quality of the recent runners produces a more reliable signal but requires more analytical work than most casual punters apply.
The second qualification is that strike rate is only one of several relevant metrics. Place strike rate is sometimes more informative than win strike rate because it captures horses running well without winning. Stable form indicators that go beyond strike rate
Three additional indicators capture stable form better than raw strike rates. The first is the percentage of runners producing positive time figures relative to the going. A yard whose runners are consistently producing fast time figures even when not winning is in better form than the strike rate alone suggests. The second indicator is the percentage of runners improving on their previous run. A yard whose horses are consistently running better than their last race – whether they are winning or not – is producing horses that are coming forward in fitness. A yard whose horses are running worse than their last is producing horses that are not at peak. The improving-versus-deteriorating split is published by some form analysis services and can be calculated manually from the form book over fourteen-day windows.
The third indicator is the pattern of unusual entries. Trainers who enter horses in unusual races – a sprinter being entered in a longer race, a maiden being entered in a Listed race, a horse coming back after a long absence – often signal something specific about the horse’s preparation.
